Do you love hanging out on social media to check in with friends and family, but back away from using it as a smart tool to grow your personal brand and professional profile?
Well you are not alone!
Most professional women I have coached are resistant to showing up on social media, if it is for the purpose of building awareness of their brand, promoting their services or sharing their experience and expertise.
To most professional women it is also a H U G E stressor if you don’t know what you’re doing, which platform to choose, what you want to say and how you want to say it!
But one thing is for sure…
Building a great social media presence online is the best way to amplify your personal brand, connect with your audience, build relationships and trust.
And, with the number of users on social media continuing to grow…
- Facebook has 2.89 billion monthly active users…
- 60% of Instagram’s 1 billion users log in daily…
- 30 million companies and 20 million jobs are on LinkedIn…
…you can be excused for feeling overwhelmed at trying to compete in the social space.
Here’s the thing, if you’re savvy, social media can have a positively massive impact on your career or business and is an essential part of your pathway to success, especially if you want to ‘own your space’ online as a leader in your niche.
Crush your fears or feelings of overwhelm and prepare yourself to take the plunge, because the good news is you don’t have to be on every social media platform to Be Seen, Be Heard, or Be Noticed – and you definitely don’t have to be everything to everyone!

The Power Of Social Media For Professional Women
If we have learned nothing else as a global community in 2020, it’s that social media matters.
Today more than ever before, people, businesses and organisations have all come together in a massive way to support each other and keep connected online.
And, due to the recent global pandemic crisis, there is a whole new wave of professionals turning up and tuning in online.
But for so many professionals, this is a foreign space. Sure, you may be used to tuning in for personal posts and lifestyle updates, but when it comes to showing up as a professional or business owner to promote you, your brand or business it can feel like a whole different ball game!
It can become a bit of a roller coaster ride trying to find balance between being seen all over the internet and making the right impact, on the right people, on the right platforms.
So, how many social media channels should you use for your business?
Too many, and you’ll spread yourself too thinly and dilute your efforts as a result. Too few, and your brand visibility and reach might suffer.
So, the secret to starting on social media, making an impact and growing your personal brand and online presence, is to keep it simple!

4 Things You Need To Identify Before You Start With Any Social Media Platform.
1. WHAT You Have To Say And How You Want To Say It
Ok, this part sounds super simple.
But before you start to bare all and spruik your products or services all over the internet, think about what you really want to say and how you want to share with others.
Remember, the goal is to build relationships to allow people to connect with you and feel like they know, like and trust you.
So your first step is to get crystal clear on what you and your personal brand stand for so you can share your brand message, your mission, and your insights with intention and meaning!
Once you have clarity on what you want to say – then decide how you want to deliver it.
Are you a natural on camera? Then perhaps YouTube is for you?
Are you a competent writer? Then perhaps creating long-form blog content and articles is for you.
Do you prefer interviewing others, or is talking your thing? Then you may be a hit at podcasting.
Are you in a creative industry or enjoy expressing yourself with images and creative content? Then Instagram can definitely be a powerful brand and business tool for you.
Or if you are a great conversationalist, have strong opinions, enjoy group chats, and being part of bigger conversions, then Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter may be your niche.
2. WHO You’re Saying It To
The simple message is: you don’t have to be everything to everyone.
I love saying this, as no truer words have ever been spoken! If you try to be everything to everyone then you are definitely setting yourself up for the impossible and you will #fail.
So pick your lane and gain absolute clarity on your ideal customer or audience.
Ask yourself, “who do I want to reach and connect with?”
Think about it as if you are sitting across a table with someone you want to have a coffee with to share your thoughts and ideas or your products or services.
Who is this person? What do they do, where do they hang out online, what interests them, what are their struggles?
Knowing your target market and identifying your ideal customer avatar – will give you greater opportunity to reach the right people and the confidence to speak up to an audience where your voice matters.
The result is an amplified voice that truly resonates and impacts on those who need it most.
3. WHERE You Want To Say It
When you show up, you want to shine…consistently!
Make sure your social media presence is comfortable and a natural extension of who you are, not forced or fake.
That means, if you don’t like hanging out in certain social media forums and you have to force it, then simply don’t hang out there!
Because, for your personal brand and business to really get traction and to make a lasting and memorable impact on social media, then consistency is key.
If you start hanging out, and you’re not enjoying the experience or the conversations, your enthusiasm will soon wane and you and your brand presence will lose momentum and impact with your audience and they may move on… (to one of your competitors!)
4. WHY You’re Saying It
So that brings me to the big ‘WHY” marketers and branding experts (like me :) ) are always talking about.
Understand your ‘Why’ in the context of setting clear intentions for your social media presence.
Why are you there? What do you want to achieve from your social media presence?
Do you want to participate in professional, intelligent, and thought-provoking discussions?
Do you want to increase engagement, boost exposure, or gain new followers?
Do you want to build your authority to be more recognised and influential in your niche?
Are you interested in social media advertising? Keen to get hot leads or drive more traffic to your website?
Your options are almost limitless – so it’s critical you determine why you’re on social media, and look at crafting goals that help you reach your targets.
