Have you ever felt undervalued in your workplace or underappreciated? Have you spent years at what you thought was your dream job, working around the clock, giving it your all, but still getting overlooked for a promotion? Or maybe you’ve been struggling to grow your business years after you started?

If you said yes to any of these questions then you’re not alone. In my years as a business coach for women entrepreneurs and public image consultant, I have seen and worked with women who have all the technical skills to be amazing at their careers but have no idea how to be noticed and market those very same skills.

Learning to Market Yourself is Essential to Taking Your Business to the Next Level

I once worked with a client who was struggling to take her practice to the next level. She’s a fantastic lawyer who really wanted to improve her personal brand and grow her own client list. While she had all the skills and technical know-how of a veteran counselor, she wasn’t quite sure how to work on her professional image.

We invested time strategizing her leadership development and personal brand. We worked on highlighting her skills in law as well as how she could leverage from her wisdom, unique point of difference and why she was the perfect match for her potential clients.

Within a short period of time, she was able to sign on more clients and help more people.

With a bit of planning and coaching, you can also learn the secrets of building your brand! I can teach you how to connect with people, be the go-to person in your field, and expand your network.

Explore More Ways to Show Off Your Skills

One of the reasons why some leaders get overlooked is that they are assumed to have the same skills or talents as the rest. Basically, there is nothing that stands out about them that makes them special compared to other leaders in their field. They may have a title and won awards, but so have many others.  So, why should they be chosen for a promotion, or offered exciting new opportunities?

If you want to stand out from the crowd, you must show people what you can do that others in your field can’t. Have a knack for video editing? Offer to host a series of YouTube videos for your clients. Secretly fluent in Portuguese? Volunteer to meet with your firm’s European clients. Talented in design and art? Include it in your list of business services  and integrate it into your personal brand development. The more layers of you that are represented in your brand – the more interesting and valuable you become and opportunities you will attract!

These special skills and proficiencies instantly make you more valuable and attractive to clients, customers, and business partners. No longer are you just the run-of-the-mill professional, you’re this multi-talented specialist everyone would want to work with.

Actively Attracting Key Stakeholders

Another pitfall for top female executives and female entrepreneurs is we’re conditioned to be humble and never boast about our achievements. Well, I say it’s about time we set aside these outdated practices and showed people how phenomenal women in business are!

As a leader, you need to not only excel in your field but also put in the effort to share your success with others. You have to put yourself out there, show your full worth in the world and say “This is what I can do! This is what I have achieved! And This is who I am!”

It’s important to celebrate milestones and successes. Sure, you can do that in private, nothing wrong with that. But, if you want to attract business partners, clients, and other key stakeholders, you have to market and publicize those achievements to differentiate yourself from competitors.

Do you think Erin Brockovich or Sheryl Sandberg stayed quiet in the background to get to where they are now? No, they stepped out of their comfort zones to share their gifts to better be seen, heard, and noticed.

If they could do it, so can you!

Seek Out Your Opportunities

People say “good things come to those who wait.” I say “good things are found by those who look for them.”

If you want more opportunities to expand your network and develop your personal brand, you have to go and find them. Attend social networking activities, participate in professional seminars, reach out to industry leaders you admire. These are all simple things you can do to connect with people and tell them about your business and services.

Be confident and courageous in shaping your own path and future. Even if you think the chances of receiving a reply or landing that deal is slim, shoot for the moon! You don’t know who could be willing to take a chance on you.

Stop Overthinking and Take a Leap of Faith

Most ideas never come to fruition because we’re scared of failing. But it’s so much better to try and fail than to not have tried at all. If you spend all your energy worrying about what could go wrong instead of developing programs and strategies to grow your personal brand and career, then you’ll never get ahead.

It’s the same for marketing yourself for your brand and business. You won’t continue to grow your authority or brand awareness if you don’t try new things, explore new paths, or meet new people.
