Today’s biggest myth about female leaders and corporate women is that you work for someone else! This simply isn’t true. And if you think this way too, then think again.

Many women in leadership struggle with gaining the recognition, authority and influence they desire in their industry.  They work hard and put their heads down, believing that promotions, leadership roles, or business will be rolling in if they do so.  However, many people are unfortunately unaware that this is their reality.  Instead, they spend hours of their time stuck in the weeds, doing work that allows other people to look good, falling short of their career or leadership goals and aspirations.

The truth is…

If you wish to be a leader in your niche market or industry, you must first consider yourself a business owner in the business of YOU. If you can accomplish this, you will experience a mindset shift so monumental yet straightforward that it will change how you think, act, and feel about yourself and how others see you.

Here’s why.

The Biggest Mindset Secret For Female Leaders

The most common myth about professional women is that we work for other people, businesses or organizations! This is absolutely NOT true!

You are your own business! And this is the number one mindset secret for all successful leaders and high-performance women today, regardless of whether you are professionals, entrepreneurs, or business owners.

The more you can embrace this growth and success mindset trait, the more empowered you will feel.  You will look at your career and leadership potential with a completely different lens and new perspective to step into your confidence as the leader you want to be.

Adopting an entrepreneurial mindset allows you to show off your qualities as a good leader. Switching up your level of strategic thinking about your career, helping you get clear on your personal and professional boundaries, goals, and strategies.

If you can master this, you will find more significant focus, determination, and be less likely to compromise your values and beliefs in pursuing your career goals. You will be more visionary in your approach to your goal setting and what you want as a leader, identifying challenges and obstacles to find solutions.

Allowing yourself to be more entrepreneurial in your mindset means being more in tune with what makes you tick and what emotionally drives you to success. You will need a strong focus – meaning vision, drive, and persistence to do this.

The more you believe you are a business and the leader of your whole life, the more passionate, resourceful and determined you will be. And, the best part is you will shape the way you work, live and play with greater imagination and tenacity!

Advantages Of Thinking Like A Boss

Greater Clarity Around Your Values And Beliefs

The advantage of thinking like a boss is that you will have greater clarity around what is essential for your personal and professional growth and success. I have worked with so many women in business who put up with negative workplace cultures, being belittled, overlooked or undervalued as a ‘normal’ part of their workplace landscape. My response is that if you were a boss in your own business, would you put up with this behaviour or environment for you, your staff or even your clients?

The answer is always a resounding ‘NO’! So, my next question is, “why would you put up with negative behaviours, environments or disruptive attitudes from your colleagues, managers or superiors?”

As a business coach, I once worked with a top tier senior executive of a global banking organisation.  She constantly complained about the negative workplace culture and pressures of leading her team in a predominantly male-dominated workplace culture.

It wasn’t until during one of our coaching sessions to build her personal brand that she realised that her core value system was compromised daily.  The values she honoured, including diversity, compassion and mentoring, were not being fully honoured within her organisation.  Instead of continuing to put up with the status quo, I suggested that she put her mind to thinking like she is the business.  To find ways to empower herself as a leader, amplify her voice, live true to her values, and infuse them into the leadership team and organisation.

In other words, don’t settle, don’t accept the status quo just because it is ‘normal’.  Figure out ways to take control of your environment and then how you can work to empower other women too!

Find ways to control how you engage, communicate, interact and feel.  Identify the tricky people, the naysayers, the grumps or the bullies and design strategies to navigate and to manage them.

Identify the advocates and like-minded people to discover ways to grow and nurture alliances.  Then, model how you can empower others to maintain their individuality and resilience.  As Ellen Macarthur infamously said:

“Leaders are the catalysts for empowering other people.”

Build Your Brand To Be Your Own Boss!

There are always ways to navigate challenging people and landscapes.  Even if you struggle with self-confidence as a female professional you can make your mark and shape your future if you’re willing to level up your mindset and view your world through different lense.

Still, first, you must come from a place of power and strength, knowing who you are, what you stand for and what your boundaries are. And that is all part of building an authentic personal brand and image that resonates and connects deeply to your core values and beliefs.

The same principles apply even if you are running your own profitable business.  Sometimes, as women leaders, we work with clients that don’t sit right with us.  And it affects our motivation, creativity and energy.  In fact, over the years as a business leader, I have occasionally decided to sack my clients as they don’t align with my personal brand values or business ethics.

Knowing your values and beliefs intimately, and infusing them into your brand and business, ultimately helps you target and attract your ideal clients.

It takes courage, clarity and confidence, but if you are committed to living true to who you are and what you value, you will ultimately be able to choose your success rather than being swept away accepting less than what you deserve and desire with both your career or business goals.
